We all know that accidents will happen, and spills will occur. Especially if you have pets and young kids. Pets can urinate on the carpet, and kids will at some point puke! That alone will cause your carpet to be prone to getting dirty from pretty gross spills! And if your kids bring their juice or milk into a carpeted area, some of that will bound to spill too.

Even adults will cause accidental spills, because if you have some guests over – they are bound to spill some of their pop, coffee or adult drinks as well onto your carpet. The point has been made clear that accidents will happen, your carpet will end up with spills and staining. Now let’s focus on how to effectively clean spills from carpeting, as soon as they happen.

Let’s look and see how to effectively clean small stains whatever the source may be. It is essential to have baking soda on hand at all times. Because you will want to make sure that some baking soda is sprinkled onto the spillage right after it happens, so it absorbs it and helps remove odors. You can also purchase over-the-counter carpet cleaning powders, and have those on hand as they also contain baking powder. Then once it has dried, you can vacuum it up. It is also a good idea to have a handheld spot cleaning machine handy so you don’t have to lug out the whole vacuum.

Whatever you do, do not use laundry detergent, soap or shampoo to clean spills up on your carpet. It will only leave more of a mess by creating more residue.

When it comes to larger stains, especially when it comes to foot traffic whether it is from shoes that are worn from outside, or your kids are walking on the carpet with their bear feet, leaving oils- that will create larger dirty areas on your carpet. You can rent or even purchase a carpet steam cleaning machine, though it is less expensive to rent. You can use them on a regular basis and keep your carpet relatively clean. However, never use chemicals in the machine. Only hot water. Be sure to pre-spray the area with a cleaning solution before using it.

Whatever you do, never use too much water because excess water left on the carpet after a cleaning will attract mold and mildew. And you always must clean the machine before using it. Leftover water and debris will attract bacteria and that will be passed onto your carpet which will defeat the purpose.

However, keep in mind while you are doing everything in your power by using the tips above to keep your carpet cleaned- you will still need to hire a professional carpet cleaner once a year, or at most every two years. If you have small children or pets, you will need to have it professionally cleaned every six months. The amount of cleaning you do on your carpet will not remove all of the dirt, grime, and bacteria that have been settled deep into your carpet fibers. But maintaining your carpet on a regular basis will prolong the need for you to have a professional cleaning done, and between you caring for your carpet and having it professionally cleaned once in a while will prolong the life of your carpet as well, so you will save you the long run in regards to replacing your carpeting often!
