When it comes to cleaning your carpet effectively, you know that dabbing a bit of water and using some soap on a rag is not going to completely remove a spill from an area of your carpet. Sometimes, taking a white rag and wetting it with warm water and mixing it with some soap using it to blot up a stain can work. However, in most cases, you need something more powerful than soap and water alone.

When you think about carpet cleaning solutions that is available in home hardware stores like Home Depot, or at Wal-Mart, you shutter due to the fact that these products are loaded with harmful chemicals. And why would you want to expose your family, pets and the environment to toxic chemicals? So that is why you hesitate when it comes to purchasing carpet cleaning solutions.

However, there is good news. You can make an environmentally friendly homemade carpet cleaning solution that is just as effective as any of the products you can purchase from home hardware stores.

So what you will want to do is get an empty spray bottle and give it a good cleaning inside. Then you will look in your pantry and get some salt. Leave the salt for now but salt is a great odor remover. What you will need first is 1 cup of white vinegar and 2 cups of water. Then take some lavender oil, and if you don’t have any don’t worry. However, it is a good idea to get some because it will help remove stains and odor from your carpet.

So take the water and vinegar and mix it together, and put it in the spray bottle. Then put 2 tablespoons of salt, and add 15 drops of lavender oil into the mixture. Close the bottle, and then shake it around so nothing is concentrated.

Go and look for stained areas on your carpet, and start to spray! The salt in the solution will help draw the stain from the carpet, and bind it together so it comes to the surface. The vinegar is also quite potent as far as being a stain and odor remover, and it is so strong that plenty of water had to dilute it so it doesn’t cause damage of any kind. The lavender oil in the carpet will not only help remove odors as well but helps kill bacteria that have been breeding due to the stains. Let it sit for 15 minutes so it dries up and does its job, then vacuum the area. Voila! The stain will be gone.

However, this is an excellent way to maintain your carpet in order to keep it in decent condition. This is not a substitute for a professional carpet cleaning that your carpet will need once a year or once every two years at the very least. You will still have bacteria, dirt and debris that has been settling in the carpet fibers for a long time that can only be removed from a professional carpet cleaning technician. And when you are searching for carpet cleaning companies, be sure to make sure that they use eco-friendly and non-toxic products in order to keep your home environmentally friendly and healthy!
