Area rugs are a great addition to your home if you have hardwood or laminate flooring. In fact, Persian, Pakistani, Oriental, and Indian rugs are extremely popular and yet they are so delicate. In fact, if there is ever a spill that happens on your beloved area rug, the first thing to not do is panic! That is because there is absolutely no need to panic at all since it can be cleaned easily and effectively as long as you act fast before a stain from the spill ends up forming.
If you or someone else ends up spilling coffee, tea, an alcoholic beverage or a soft drink on your rug, don’t panic. In fact, if you are hosting a dinner party where the odds of that happening are higher than it would be otherwise- you’ll want to be prepared for this possibility. So, all you need to do if this happens is create a solution of 1 teaspoon liquid dish detergent, 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar, and 1 quart of warm water. Take a white rag, and only a white rag since colored rags will ruin the carpet more due to the dye seeping through- and put the rag into the solution and blot, don’t rub or else again, the stain will settle. Keep blotting until the stain is out and keep blotting until it is dry. Therefore, you will want to be armed by keeping out the white vinegar and liquid dish detergent on hand if you are having a party!
If you have kids or pets, there will be accidents that involve urine, feces or vomit which will be more upsetting to you if any of that ends up on your area rug. Again don’t panic because if you act fast, all of that can be removed. All you will need is the detergent solution that was described above or a citrus-oxygen cleaner. Clean it up the same way as well by using a white rag and blotting. You can also sprinkle baking soda on the area that would still be damp to lift up anything that may have settled into the rug fibers. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes so it collects the remaining debris as well as helps remove the odor. Then vacuum it up after. Use the same solution if tomato sauce, grease or other fat-based stains fall on it.
Now that you know what to do as removing stains from your area rugs, you will want to know as far as what to do in order to maintain them otherwise. They will need to be vacuumed once a week. However, because they are delicate, you will need to place a piece of nylon screen over the rug and weighting it down with books or anything heavy. Then you will need to vacuum the rug over the screen so the rug is cleaned but not damaged by the vacuum.
You will need to also have your rug professionally cleaned once a year as well, and you will want to make sure that the carpet cleaning service is reputable and will know how to clean delicate rugs carefully. Don’t go for the cheapest either, because that is a sign that they will cut corners. But now that you know everything about area rug cleaning and how to remove stains effectively, you will know how to take excellent care of your delicate and beloved area rug.
